striking the rock twice

since our pastor has been teaching on old testament law vs. new testament gospel... i have been musing on this distinction...

law began in the garden of eden as did the good news...

in god the father is the strong aversion to all sin, and the strong love of the sinner...

this may sound a bit silly, but it is almost as if god would be schizophrenic if he had not found a way to judge sin but forgive the sinner... for how does one so powerful and so all-knowing deal with the equal existence in one's self of extreme hatred of evil and extreme love of his creation, humankind?

john 3:16 vs. god forbiding moses from entering the promised land because moses disobeyed god by striking the rock twice rather than speaking to the rock... in the desert when the israelites were thirsty and complaining...

god's abhorence of disobedience makes him formidable; his love for us makes him extraordinary in that he delivered his son to death on a tree for us... so that he might love us and not destroy us...
